Artist Statement

My work is about growth, healing, and moving through energetic layers in order to reconnect with my soul. I use meditative processes in an attempt to cease to exist. Repetition allows me to reach under everything that we can see and feel in order to access that which is intangible. I interact with my work by reacting to connections between experience, process, and material.

I believe that if we could see a soul, it would look like the tangible and intangible patterns found within nature. I create discernible patterns through repetitive, often visceral, actions and images in order to demonstrate this idea. My mixed media practice acts as an indirect metaphor for interactions with various layers of existence. I see my work as a way of processing these layers.

Bio

Morrain was born under an almond tree in a small community in Northern California in 1992. She discovered an appreciation for the natural world and its potential for creative inspiration at a young age. She accredits this to the time she spent exploring the abundant landscape of the Lost Coast and the surrounding mountain ranges. She began exploring mixed media artwork intensively in 2009. It was then that she realized her time and energy was best spent exploring the potential of art making. In 2012, Morrain, received an art scholarship to Sierra Nevada College and graduated with her BFA in 2015. Since then, she has dedicated her time to creating work for her latest solo show, Tortuga. Her recent work seeks to explore performance art, natural materials, sculpture, microscopy, beadwork, photography, drawing, and shamanic practices.
